Before an assessment takes place, the person being assessed (or their parent), is required to complete a detailed background questionnaire. This helps the assessor to understand the challenges that the client has faced in the past, such as learning to read, and their current concerns. The in-person assessment itself takes 2-3 hours and involves an interview and a selection of approved standardised tests. These examine underlying abilities, literacy attainments and information processing skills, including memory, auditory (phonological) processing and processing speed. In some cases, numeracy skills are also assessed. The written report is normally produced within ten working days. Where a specific learning difficulty has been identified, it provides a diagnosis and gives detailed recommendations for the type of tuition and support that would help the client at their school, college, university or workplace. This might include adjustments for academic or professional examinations, such as extra-time or the use of a computer.
